Miz Maryland

Just a few days ago, I filed our bill to slow down natural gas drilling in the Marcellus Shale of western Maryland - the Marcellus Safe Drilling Act. It's important we take the time to protect our homes, farms, streams, rivers and forests. But while we need to make these decisions deliberately and slowly, our movement has been gathering steam fast.

This morning, I dropped the Marcellus Safe Drilling Act of 2011 in "the hopper." It'll become an official bill tomorrow!

Yesterday morning in Annapolis, I joined dozens of my colleagues to introduce marriage equality legislation. We have a fantastic opportunity to bring equal rights to the Free State this year, and I'm working as hard as I can to make it happen! In case you missed it, check out TV coverage of the press conference after the jump.

This past Saturday and Sunday, Silver Spring and Takoma Park took over the lawn at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW. Through my work with the White House, I received a stack of tickets to the Garden Tour being put on by the Obama White House, and nearly 75 families grabbed some first-come, first-served tickets.

Yesterday, with Heather Mizeur stickers in tow and my t-shirt on, I headed to the 1000 Women rally for Governor O’Malley, Lieutenant Governor Brown, and Senator Mikulski. Montgomery Blair High School - packed with elected officials, activists, and women in pink - had one thing to say: "What enthusiasm gap!??!?"

I admit it. I hate the taste of oysters. I can barely gag one down, and watch speechless as Deborah throws them back with different sauces and a glass of champagne. Ick! (Well, not the champagne part, of course.)

Earlier today, I had a great time participating in a "Poe-a-Thon" honoring American poet Edgar Allen Poe. The event was put on by South Silver Spring's Pyramid Atlantic Art Center as part of "The Big Read," a larger initiative by the National Endowment for the Arts. In addition to sharing the stage with Congressman Chris Van Hollen, it was great spending time with Pyramid Atlantic's Executive Director, my friend Jose Dominguez.

There aren’t many things I can write about yesterday's Obama rally at Bowie State University that haven’t already been written. Fired up and ready to go? Check. Inspiring? Energizing? Fantastic? Check, check, and check.

Along with an enormous crowd of students, supporters and elected officials, I was honored to welcome President Obama back to Bowie State. When the President comes to rally the troops on behalf of our Governor, it speaks volumes about what kind of Governor Maryland has.

This morning The Washington Blade released its interview with Heather, just in time for her re-election. If you haven't checked it out - and odds are you haven't - it's well worth the read.

Check it out here, and find out about who her gay hero is, which are her seminal pop culture moments, and - though she goes to about as many bars as the number of newspapers and magazines Sarah Palin reads - where she heads out for a quick bit of nightlife.

My father, a retired union welder, impressed on me at a young age how much it meant to him when our State Senator and my mentor, the late Penny Severns, came to his Caterpillar plant the morning after election day to thank the workers for their support.
